James Mattingly
(American, born 1934, died 2006)
James Mattingly (1934-2006) mainly created richly detailed intaglio prints where the imagery is carved or etched into a surface and the finely carved lines hold the ink.
Mattingly grew up in California and after high school, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957, stationed at Langley Field, Virginia. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from San Jose State University in California. Mattingly founded the printmaking program at Western Oregon University, where he taught from 1968 to 1994, and was based in Oregon for the rest of his life.
