Quilts and Sewing
September is National Sewing Month! Here we feature artworks that include sewing as an important technique in their creation, often combined with other methods. The focus of these works are the elements of art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value) and not simply the technique itself. However, the sewing technique itself is sometimes part of a statement as well: sewing has traditionally been assigned as "women's work" in many cultures. And the vast majority of these artworks are made by artists who are women. The range of sewing or stitching included in these artworks varies from being the main technique to barely visible stitching and appliqué used to embellish an artwork.
