About the Artwork

Golden Brain is a metal sculpture created by artist Gale McCall. She cut and welded plated steel to construct the form. She then drew the relief texture using a welding rod. She finished the surface using gold leaf. She notes, "The welding in this piece was used not only to weld it together but as a mark making device."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.

About the Artist

Gale McCall is a California-based artist. She creates paintings, metal and ceramic sculptures, and installations for public spaces. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California in 1976. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Central Washington University in Ellensburg in 1980. She notes, "My art reflects an intuitive commentary on orders and disorders in nature and the civilized world."
