About the Artwork

Photographer Jeff Zaruba captured Bainbridge Island, May 1990 as part of a growing collection of personal images. After many years as a commercial photographer, in 1989 he began to focus on documenting his own travels and experiences. He describes this body of work as "captured bits of life, light and pattern. Often, these are fragmented, narrow views of a much larger scene. I find myself interested and attracted to things that man has created. The picture from Bainbridge Island is interesting because of the road. When I look at this picture, I think--someone built this road just for me. It allows me to enjoy trees, weather, silence, and light. It provides a place for me to run--a pathway. There is something symbolic about the road leading you into the unknown that makes the photo appealing."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Onalaska School District.

About the Artist

Jeff Zaruba is a photographer based in Sonoma County. He creates commercial and fine art photographs documenting his world travels. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University in 1975. He lived in Seattle, Washington for many years, where he ran a commercial photography studio. He has worked with many corporate clients including Alaska Airlines, Microsoft, and Pacific Telecom.
