About the Artwork

Aerial of Mt. Baker and the MV Evergreen State is part of artist Robert Demar's 'Nautical Highways' series of photographs. This series captures and studies the ferries that service the San Juan Islands. The artist and his wife, Robin Atkins, published ninety of the photographs as a book. He notes, "I've been taking photographs of ferry boats from the air, on board, from other boats, and from the land for over a decade – around 4,000 exposures to date. I have endeavored to capture the essence of the ferries as completely as possible…"

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Federal Way Public Schools.

About the Artist

Photographer Robert Demar captures images that celebrate nature and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest landscape.

Demar was born in California and moved to Seattle as a young boy. He started taking photos and working in his own dark room in the 1970s. He has been based on San Juan Island, in North Puget Sound, Western Washington, since 1989.
