About the Artwork

Artist Susan Hereford's took the photograph Bald Man with a Cigarette and a Sunset on a ferry between Victoria, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington. It is part of a series of color photographs that use coastal landscapes to explore color and form. She combined a long exposure with a flash to create the layers of light, shadow, and color.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.

About the Artist

Artist Susan Hereford is an Oregon-based photographer. She describes her work as an attempt to capture "a moment in time." She received an artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1979. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon in 1970.
