About the Artwork

Pacific Madrone Knot was taken by photographer Earl Olsen on Orcas Island, Washington in 1989, while on a walk in early morning. This piece captures the varying texture and color of the Madrone tree, which commonly grows along coastal areas in the Pacific Northwest, and is known for its beautiful peeling bark and dense wood.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Seattle College.

About the Artist

Northwest photographer Earl Olsen creates his images to "see the unseen in the commonplace that surrounds us every day." He lives and works on Whidbey Island, Northwestern Washington.
