Untitled (Vase), 1987

Connie Ritchie
American (born 1954)

Location: Sidney Glen Elementary, Port Orchard

About the Artwork

'Untitled (vase)' is part of artist Connie Ritchie's body of hand-colored photographs. She created the still life composition by placing small pieces of paper in the scene. Using multiple exposures of the same scene, she removed each piece of paper for different amounts of time. This resulted in an image with various levels of detail. She notes, "Still lifes have often been comments on the moving, changing life we live. Each object in the scene is a symbol for an idea about life… The many diagonals within the image represent both action and the layering of life. Our perceptions have many layers. We see the surface and then if we ask ourselves questions we can see more and more. Life is action. The only constant is change."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Kitsap School District.
