This abstract sculpture by artist Mark Calderon references fossils and natural forms, while exploring texture, space, and material. Created from cement, the surface features subtle variations in color. Five openings expose hidden internal objects.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Western Washington University.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Mark Calderon creates abstract and conceptual sculptures, installations, prints, and works on paper. He uses his art to explore nature, death, religion, and ancient cultures and societies. Many of his artwroks have an "ancient look" to them.
Calderon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in printmaking from San Jose State University in California.
