This abstract sculpture by artist Mark Calderon explores texture, space, and material. Created from cement, the surface features several openings that expose hidden internal objects, and open areas with glass. The composition references fossils and natural forms.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Western Washington University.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Mark Calderon creates abstract and conceptual sculptures, installations, prints, and works on paper. He uses his art to explore nature, death, religion, and ancient cultures and societies. Many of his artwroks have an "ancient look" to them.
Calderon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in printmaking from San Jose State University in California.
