Against the Current is a mixed-media collage by artist Mark Calderon. It is comprised of layers of paper surrounding a fish suspended using wire, and explores the relationship between color and texture while leaving the symbolism open to interpretation.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Washington University.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Mark Calderon creates abstract and conceptual sculptures, installations, prints, and works on paper. He uses his art to explore nature, death, religion, and ancient cultures and societies. Many of his artwroks have an "ancient look" to them.
Calderon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in printmaking from San Jose State University in California.
