About the Artwork

Artist David Gallagher was commissioned to create Segmental Sculpture in the first years of Washington's Art in Public Places Program. As a whole, the sculpture presents a dynamic interaction between materials, textures, and forms. Gallagher constructed the disk and column elements in sections. He first cut the cedar into pieces, joined them together, and shaped them with different carving tools. He then rolled the bronze onto each element.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Green River College.

About the Artist

Olympia, Washington-based artist and professor David Gallagher (1937-1981) created abstract sculptures in wood. He taught at The Evergreen State College, in Olympia, Western Washington, from 1978 until his death in 1981. He previously also taught at the University of Denver in Colorado and at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Gallagher earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Washington University in Ellensburg and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle.
