About the Artwork

Artist Ronnie Tessler captured the image Massada while traveling in Israel. She notes that this image is part of a body of photographs that capture Israel's many contrasting characteristics. She examines the juxtaposition of east and west, Jewish and Arabic cultures, and extremes of landscape and architecture. The title references the ancient ruins of Masada overlooking the desert.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Pierce College District.

About the Artist

Canadian artist Ronnie Tessler creates documentary photographs that investigate diverse communities and social subjects.

Tessler is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was the first executive director of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Center. She continues to work as an advocate for the arts and cultural institutions in British Columbia.
