About the Artwork

Maenad is part of artist Brenda Hemsing's series "Tree Pictures," captured using a primitive camera, and featuring double-exposed imagery and hand-coloring. Hemsing hopes to convey the symbolic power of trees, which she notes, "possess characteristics capable of personifying human emotion." The titles in this series are based on different mythical figures, and Maenad represents the Greek priestesses of gods Dionysus and Orpheus.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Puyallup School District.
