About the Artwork

Nine Steps is an infrared photograph taken by artist Terry Reed in North Dakota in 1973. Infrared photography captures the glow of radiant energy not visible by the human eye. The artist states: "This infrared photograph of stairs leading up to a glowing cloud symbolizes the journey of life for me...This image is a reminder to stay focused on the quest while seeking the answer to that question, 'where am I going?'"

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tonasket School District.

About the Artist

Terry Reed is a Seattle-based photographer whose work explores form, light and color in landscape, still life, and abstracted imagery. In his own words: "We don't need color, we don't need a full spectrum of visible light to feel the message. We need an inner stillness so we can hear our heart's song."
