About the Artwork

Photographer Elwood Jones composed Heliconia with a unique and intimate perspective, capturing the vibrant color of the tropical flowering plant. It is part of the artist's lifelong body of work dedicated to presenting the "universal expression" of flowers as symbols of "peace, sorrow, love, and joy."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Dieringer School District.

About the Artist

Seattle-based psychiatrist Dr. Elwood Jones (1925-2005) was an accomplished photographer, with works collected nationally. Best known for his intimate compositions of flowers, Jones sought to "preserve in imagery their ephemeral beauty."
