American

Location: Katherine G. Johnson Elementary, Tacoma

About the Artwork

'New Frontiers' is one of two paintings by CJ Hungerman whose imagery references the school's focus on STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. The school, Katherine G. Johnson Elementary in Spanaway, is named in honor of the female African-American mathematician who was instrumental in getting the first astronauts to the moon in 1969 and worked for the U.S. space program for more than thirty years. The colorful painting features math and science equations and symbols, nebulae (giant interstellar clouds of gas and dust), a Camas lily flower, Mount Rainier, and much more. Katherine Johnson is featured on the right side of the painting. Hungerman notes, "When we study science, technology, engineering, art and math, we better ourselves. The qualities of productivity, tenacity, and perseverance better humanity. Katherine Johnson embodied these qualities. Her example will influence students to literally reach for the stars."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Bethel School District.
