About the Artwork

Symphony in Five Movements - Swimmer is part of a suite of five interactive sculptures created by artist Ken Turner for the Washington State School for the Blind. He created the five figures to celebrate sports activities popular with blind athletes. They celebrate the grace and tenacity of the school's community. At the base of each sculpture, Turner installed metal poles that create a tone when struck with a cane. Each sculpture creates a different tone. Together the sculptures engage sight, sound, and touch.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State School for the Blind.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Ken Turner creates photographs and metal sculptures. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in 1977. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1991. He has served as an instructor for the University of Washington and City University.
