About the Artwork
Suspended twelve feet off the floor in Tacoma's Gray Middle School, Rae Mahaffey's installation, "Intervals," fills the commons with bright color and reflected light. The fifteen fused glass panels explore pattern theory and color relationships, with imagery inspired by education and community.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma Public Schools.
About the Artist
Artist Rae Mahaffey is a Portland, Oregon-based painter. She creates large-scale patterns, painting them slowly, deliberately building layers as a part of her process. The lengthy time she spends on her paintings is a reaction to the fast-paced society of the digital world. Mahaffey studied at Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College in Bellingham (Northwestern Washington), at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and the University of Washington in Seattle.
