About the Artwork
Breaking the Surface is a mixed-media abstract painting created by artist Karen Schminke. The center panel features a lenticular print, which creates the illusion of depth. She notes that this piece “endeavors to bring the viewer into an intimate relationship with nature. Subtle textures and patterns are interwoven in complex relationships that are reminiscent of the image sources. Viewers apply their own perspective in resolving the elements presented. In this way, the work becomes a focus of contemplation and meditation, mirroring the role of nature in our lives.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Columbia Basin College.
