About the Artwork

Red City is part of artist Sally Sellers' series of quilts composed with repeating imagery of houses. Sellers began the series after her young daughter moved from home to a nursing facility due to serious illness. Sellers notes that she created this body of work to challenge the concept of what a home is, and as a meditation on the instincts to nurture and protect. This piece features bold red hues and dynamic patterns and textures. She chose red intuitively, feeling a sense of emotional connection to the color, and nots that she found it satisfying to "be swallowed in its intensity." She notes that the message in this quilt is a simple statement about embracing the unexpected. She states, "There exists a great deal of individuality in this world, even when on the surface a sameness seems to dominate. There are intriguing differences that deserve to be discovered and celebrated, if you take the time."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma Public Schools.
