About the Artwork
Artist Haiying Wu designed Garden of Meditation for the patients and staff of Western State Hospital in Lakewood, Western Washington. Wu created a space that is friendly to children playing or offer a place to be outdoors. This site-specific artwork consists of three terrazzo benches surrounding planter boxes, three cast iron tree grates, and three stools. Chess boards are built into the design of the benches. The tree grates feature images of fish, animals, and plants.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Social and Health Services.
About the Artist
Artist Haiying Wu creates figurative sculptures for public spaces. Born in China, Wu attended the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He worked as a sculptor creating public artworks in Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan province. After emigrating to the United States, Wu earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle. He has created well-known memorials around the Pacific Northwest and other parts of the United States. He is based in Western Washington.
