Andy Wilbur-Peterson and Greg Colfax
Andy Wilbur-Peterson (American Skokomish, born 1955) - Greg Colfax (American Makah, born 1948)
Native American artists Andy Wilbur-Peterson (Skokomish) and Greg Colfax (Makah) collaborated on carved sculptural artworks.
Andy Wilbur-Peterson is a member of the Skokomish Tribe and grew up in Shelton, Western Washington. At the age of twelve, he was taking commissions for his bead work. As a teenager, he helped gather materials with well-known basket makers, Louisa Pulsifer and Emily Miller. This experience, and a museum tour of Northwest Coast art, inspired him to explore art. In 1987, Wilbur-Peterson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Native American studies from The Evergreen State College in Olympia. He creates art in many mediums – including basketry, printmaking, glass, wool weaving, graphic art, and carving – in the Salish tradition of the Pacific Northwest.
Greg Colfax is an artist, educator, and member of the Makah Tribe. He lives in Neah Bay, on the Olympic Peninsula in Northwestern Washington. He learned to carve based on the traditions and teachings of his family and community. Colfax studied as an educator in creative writing, with degrees from both Western Washington University in Bellingham, Northwestern Washington, and the University of Washington in Seattle. He has taught in the Native American Studies Program at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Western Washington.
