About the Artwork

Artist Mary Nash painted Omicrom Studio, The MacDowell Colony after returning from a fellowship at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. Composer Edward MacDowell and his wife, pianist Marian MacDowell, founded the artist's colony in 1907. This self-portrait shows the artist standing outside of her studio there, set among a grove of birch trees. She based the figure in the background on a fellow artist at the colony, composer Harley Gaber.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Riverside School District.

About the Artist

Mary Nash creates paintings, drawings, assemblages, and artist's books.
Nash earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1973. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Washington State University in Pullman, Eastern Washington, in 1976.
