Donald Barrie
American (born 1938)

Location: Badger Mountain Elementary, Richland

About the Artwork

Artist Donald Barrie created this twelve-panel landscape mural for Badger Mountain Elementary in Richland, Southeastern Washington. It shows a 360-degree view from the top of Badger Mountain. To create the composition, Barrie made many trips to the Richland area to photograph and sketch the local landscape. Barrie began painting the mural after the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. A combination of ash from the eruption and fumes from the paint caused severe irritation in Barrie's eyes. To ensure that he could paint safely, he waited until his eyes had healed to complete the mural.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Richland School District.
