About the Artwork

Artist Susan Hereford's photograph Girl in a Swing, Rockaway, 1983 captures the atmosphere of the Oregon coast at sunset. It is part of a series of color photographs that use coastal landscapes to explore color and form. She used a long camera exposure to capture the scene. This technique created a dream-like quality to the light and movement of the composition.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Ocosta School District.

About the Artist

Artist Susan Hereford is an Oregon-based photographer. She describes her work as an attempt to capture "a moment in time." She received an artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1979. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon in 1970.
