About the Artwork

Artist Jennifer Stabler-Holland created Draw Down (1) by combining photography and painting. It is part of a series called "Virtual Reality." In her technique, she transfers the black and white image to watercolor paper and then layers in areas of hand painted color. She notes, "I set up contrasts between color and black and white in order to accentuate the conflict between humankind and his environment and his own biological nature… The image almost becomes super real or surreal; when the watercolor background is added, the trompe l'oeil effect is complete. The image appears very real like a photo-realistic painting, but it is no more real than an image on a computer is real."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Elma School District.
