About the Artwork

Northwest artist Michael Spafford creates paintings and prints that translate mythological symbols and narratives into abstracted visual terms. Interested in dualism and metamorphosis, Romulus and Remus C abstractly depicts twin brothers, the mythic founders of Rome, suckling beneath the figure of a large wolf.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Seattle Public Schools.

About the Artist

Celebrated Northwest artist Michael Spafford (1935-2022) created paintings and prints that translate mythological symbols and narratives into abstracted visual terms.

Spafford earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (1959) from Pomona College in California and a Master of Arts degree (1960) from Harvard University in Massachusetts. He was Professor Emeritus (1963-1994) of the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle. In 2019, he was honored with a Washington State Governor's Arts and Heritage Award.
