About the Artwork

Rainier is a sculptural plaza, designed by artist Andrea Blum. Rainier school is a habitation center for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The campus looks out at views of Mount Rainier. This installation serves as a gathering place for residents to be outside, interacting with each other and with nature. The artist notes that the structure of the installation emphasizes accessibility. She made practical considerations to accommodate wheel chair access and the needs of blind and medicated residents. She sees the design as presenting “a collaboration of needs and fantasies.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Social and Health Services.
