About the Artwork

Façade is part of artist Joseph Mannino's body of works informed by classical architecture. Half of the piece depicts a spiral staircase, while the other side presents a cross-section of carved spaces. He notes that his use of architectural imagery stems from its symbolic relationship to "the order, values, politics, and ambitions of a society."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.

About the Artist

Mannino received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Knox College in Illinois, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Illinois University. He taught ceramics at Carnegie Mellon University for 35 years (1986-2021).
