Mako is part of artist Peter Alexander's body of abstract velvet paintings created in the 1980s. Layering expressive forms in bold colors over a black velvet background, these works explore the rich intensity of contrasts between material, color, and imagery.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.

About the Artist

Peter Alexander creates sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints that explore color relationships, form, and light. He is best known for his colorful, translucent geometric sculptures made from industrial resin, and his association with the Light and Space movement of Southern California in the 1960s and 70s.

Alexander received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles. His artworks are part of the collections of many major museums and institutions.
