About the Artwork
Space Toboggan is a ceramic relief sculpture created by artist Thomas Emmerson. The title refers to a wooden sled characterized by an upward curve at the front. The bold, abstract composition and curved forms are based on traditional formline design elements found in Indigenous Coast Salish artistic traditions.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Office of the Washington State Auditor.
About the Artist
Walla Walla-based artist and professor Thomas Emmerson creates sculpture, drawings, and paintings.Emmerson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Walla Walla College, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He began teaching at Walla Walla College in 1974, and became chair of the Art Department in 1983. He retired in 2015 and continues to work and live in Southeastern Washington.
