About the Artwork

Rhythm in August Light is part of artist Louis Hafermehl's series of abstract geometric artworks. It explores and observes the movement, patterns, and forms that result from changing daylight. He used aluminum foil on the silver diamond pattern on the outside edges.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Seattle College.

About the Artist

C. Louis Hafermehl (1916-1989) created expressive landscape and abstract paintings.

Hafermehl was born in Kansas. He studied art at Bethany College in Kansas, the Chicago Art Institute, and at the Art Students League in New York City. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Hafermehl taught art at the University of Washington for twenty-six years, until the early 1980s when he retired to Kansas.
