Salon Des Refuses, 1982

John Franklin Rice
American (born 1943, died 2021)

Location: Clover Park Technical College, Lakewood

About the Artwork

Salon Des Refuses is a painting by artist John Rice. The variety of people found at the Pike Place Market in Seattle inspired this piece. The title means "exhibition of rejects' in French. This phrase refers to the exhibition of artworks that a juried art show did not originally select. Perhaps this artwork's title and imagery suggest themes of being an outsider or outcast, and of overcoming rejection to find your place in the world.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Clover Park Technical College.
