About the Artwork
The Secret Garden is a mixed media sculpture created by artist Kathryn Glowen. She made this piece by assembling recycled objects and natural materials. The 1911 children's novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett inspired her. She describes the secret garden as a "haven or special place where a person can go to think, watch, or contemplate the world we live in— or the world in our minds. Everyone's 'secret garden' is different, and is theirs alone."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.
About the Artist
Northwest Artist Kathryn Glowen creates sculptures using recycled objects and materials.Born in Seattle, Glowen has lived with her family on a farm in Arlington, Northwestern Washington since 1978. She studied fine art and graphic design at Washington State University in Pullman, Eastern Washington, and the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.
