About the Artwork

Collaborating ceramic artists John Benn and Colleen Gallagher created this geometric tile mural. The stoneware tiles feature different colored glazes, patterns, and imagery. The artists note, "The geometric patterns were derived from American quilt patterns, Navajo textiles, and Asian paintings. The birds are magpies, a common bird in the Spokane area."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane Public Schools.

About the Artist

Ceramic artists and partners John Benn and Colleen Gallagher live on Harstine Island in South Puget Sound, Western Washington. They continue to use these kilns to fire their individual artworks.

Colleen Gallagher studied ceramics at Rutgers University in New Jersey and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She teaches at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Western Washington.
