About the Artwork

Artist Patricia Hartleben created this colorful installation of fiber sculptures for Whitman Elementary School. She coiled approximately 1000 feet of colored yarns around cotton piping to create this piece. She then attached the cord to geometric plywood shapes. She sought to create a "very happy and playful image." She notes, "I wanted to use a bright spectrum of colors to intensify the playful quality. I created a series of overlapping rectilinear shapes that are distorted into subtle curves and softly rounded at the corners. I arranged these pieces within the space I had to work in so that they would set up a harmonious rhythm, giving the impression of movement. It is my hope that the students and faculty at Whitman will experience my artwork as being uplifting and fun."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Spokane Public Schools.
