You Are Here, 1983

American (born 1957)

About the Artwork

Artist Katherine Cresci created the collage ‘You Are Here’ after she returned from studying in Europe. It is an abstract, birds-eye representation of her neighborhood. It combines beads, string, and sticks in a detailed, map-like grid. A white “X” seems to mark the spot. She notes that she created this piece as a way to find her direction in life. She states, “Realizing where you have been and where you are at the moment will help you to decide the easiest route to where you are going.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.
