About the Artwork

Chewelah is a large-scale painting created by artist Eric Grohe. The colorful and stylized composition captures the majestic landscape around Gess Elementary School in Eastern Washington. In the foreground, a boy stands on the banks of the Colville River. The town of Chewelah is in the distance, set against the backdrop of Chewelah Mountain and the Colville National Forest.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Chewelah School District.

About the Artist

Northwest artist Eric Grohe creates large-scale murals for public spaces and communities. He has worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. He served as an archeological illustrator for the Department of Archeology of Cambridge University, travelling to sites in France, Greece, Israel and England in 1971 to 1972. He grew up in New York, and moved to Seattle in 1959. He studied at the Burnley School of Professional Art in Seattle, now The Art Institute of Seattle.
