About the Artwork

Metro Hitch is a colorful abstract sculpture by artist Jack Becker. It is part of the artist's body of "closed form" sculptures characterized by large, voluminous forms. Reflecting on the creation of this piece, Becker noted "Metro Hitch refers to the written word. It could be a giant initial, or a big red letter...There is an implied movement of the sculpture in parts that continues to happen as one moves around the piece." Originally commissioned for the Department of Printing in Tumwater, Metro Hitch was moved to South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Puget Sound Community College.

About the Artist

Jack Becker (1943-2010) created abstract sculptures for public spaces, and was a painter and arts administrator. He received a Bachelor of Arts in art from the University of Wisconsin and studied art history in Washington, D.C.
