About the Artwork

Homeboy #2 is part of artist Onajide Shabaka's series of works, including drawings, photography, installations and sculpture, that explored the identities and experiences of different people he encountered on the streets of Miami. He created this drawing by first sketching the figures, then smoking the paper with candle soot, and erasing the soot to give form to the figures.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Sequim School District.

About the Artist

Artist Onajide Shabaka creates artworks that combine photographic imagery with various materials. His conceptual, time-based compositions explore narrative, light, and form.
He has studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Pacific Fashion Institute in San Francisco, and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
