About the Artwork
Artist John Moilanen created Gillnetter; circa 1950 as an exploration of the static and dynamic forces found in man's interaction with nature. In this "conceptual realist" painting, Moilanen depicts "the lonely Virgil of a lone fisherman in the morning hours of damp checking his set of nets."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Seattle Public Schools.

Northwest artist John Moilanen creates paintings designed to "recast our perception of the present and past history of the Pacific Northwest through the fusion of abstraction and expressionism which reflects our unique local landscape character."
