Island Dreams, 1994

About the Artwork
Island Dreams is part of textile artist Constance Parker Miller's body of hand-painted and stenciled floor cloths. This piece features the topography of Bainbridge Island, Washington, where the artist lives. With this work, Miller notes that she "wanted to show an island reality prior to the pioneers, roads and modern technology. I wanted to dream of a place I know well, and feel what it was like to walk on the ground, through the trees, to look out across the water, to encounter the animals and plants that once lived there."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Anacortes School District.
About the Artist
Northwest artist Constance Parker Miller primarily creates painted canvas floorcloths that explore color, form, and sensation. She calls this medium "a place, a stage, territory, geography, a story board, a game, a vehicle, and a magic carpet." Before developing her visual art practice, Miller pursued a career in theater. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
