About the Artwork

El Jardin is a charcoal drawing created by artist Mary Ann Peters. The title translates to "the garden" in Spanish. She created this piece after a five-month artist residency in Spain. She notes, "It is an image that references literally to the many gardens and courtyards so integral to Spanish homes, but also incorporates the symbolic associations of the garden as metaphor for birth and rebirth."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Olympic College.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Mary Ann Peters balances a studio practice with the creation of public art projects and arts activism. She notes, "I work from the premise that images are never neutral and that they sustain layered meaning from the inception of an idea to the completed piece. Historical narratives, architecture, science, personal heritage, politics and questions of perception have all played a part in my thinking over the years."

Mary Ann Peters received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Printmaking from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1978.
