About the Artwork

Willow by the River is part of artist Bruce Douglas Beal's body of colorful and expressive landscape paintings. The landscape of the American South and the play of light through foliage inspired this imagery. Beal fills his studio with references to New Orleans and Elvis Presley and notes that "Its ambience makes me feel joyous."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Clover Park School District.

About the Artist

Bruce Douglas Beal (1938-2022) created paintings and prints inspired by the landscape of the Southern United States. He taught art at Eastern Washington University in Cheney for several decades. Beal was born in Logan, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (1966) and a Master of Fine Arts degree (1968) from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
