About the Artwork

Ann Gardner's glass mosaic sculpture 'Lebeg' creates a space of meditative beauty in the busy environment of the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. The sculpture is made of nine elliptical pendants that are covered with thousands of pieces of translucent and reflective glass. It hangs in the 85-foot tall atrium and slowly moves (attached to a motor), casting colors throughout the space. About the artwork's title, Gardner notes that "Lebeg is a Hungarian word meaning ‘slight movement in the air'. I dedicated the sculpture to David Gulassa, a steel fabricator for this project [and friend] who passed away recently in a kayaking accident. His name is of Hungarian heritage and I wanted to honor his memory in this way."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Convention Center.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Ann Gardner creates sculptures using glass and mosaic materials. Her works explore pattern and rhythm in organic forms. She studied ceramics and fine art at the University of Oregon and Portland State University.
