About the Artwork
Perception and Reality is a humorous wood sculpture created by artist Kim Hoffman. The imagery suggests a "fish tale," with a fisherman exaggerating the size of their catch. This piece is part of a body of work featuring images of salmon. Hoffman notes, "I see the salmon as an icon of life, the struggle of birth, growth, and death. The salmon image is our past, present and future. The living fish marks the progression of seasonal changes with their locations, size and condition. They are my calendar."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Arts Commission.
About the Artist
Oregon-based artist Kim Hoffman creates sculptures in wood and metal. He is a professor of art at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.Hoffman received a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle.
