About the Artwork
Unfolding Sculptures is a series of abstract mylar forms created by artist Sonya Ishii. Inspired by origami paper folding, the artist notes that the forms "are evocative of shells, insects or flowers...they are part of a family, yet subtly unique."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Skagit Valley College.
About the Artist
Artist Sonya Ishii's grandparents emigrated from Japan to Hawaii, where she spent her childhood. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oregon and studied Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her artworks are influenced by Zen Buddhism and European modernism.
