About the Artwork

Jose Orantes' painting Huipil de Pajaros is inspired by the patterns and colors of the huipil tunic. It is a bright, colorful, and heavily patterned woven top or dress commonly worn and handmade by Indigenous women in Central America.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Washington School District.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Jose Orantes creates vibrantly colored and patterned paintings and public murals that explore universal and personal themes. Born and raised in Guatemala, Orantes studied painting and sculpture at the National School of Art in Guatemala. He has also taught art in schools and other venues across Washington.
