About the Artwork

Off With Their Lids!! is an art quilt created by artist Wendy Huhn. It is part of her humorous and insightful examination of traditional female roles. The idea of recycling and the division of household labor inspired this quilt. She notes, "The man and woman are symbolic of life in the 1950s when the household tasks fell under the job title of Female. The man of the house, we went to WORK. The woman pouring out of the can is a re-occurring image in my work and is me. Guilt is the feeling the hands symbolize, the guild I feel when I don't take the time to recycle. Just as the stencil of the person throwing trash into the can is doing. Did he/she check to see if it had a number on it and could be recycled?"

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Chelan School District.
